Put your saw on a diet with bar integrated braking

Side Step™ is a bar brake (US Patent 6,769,187) featuring an offset groove to create a torturous path for the chain.  Patent description can be found at http://patft.uspto.gov/

The groove offset can be throttle linked to control chain motion.  Further, it can be used as a kickback brake when actuated by an upper hand guard for weight savings when the band brake is eliminated.

Groove offset makes a difficult path for the drive links.  The ultimate in braking is the collision of a drive link with the slit.
With the actuator forward, normal cutting resumes.  For a smaller package, an internal bar actuator can be used.

Throttle controlled (arrow), Side Step™ can be used with a production kickback brake for continuous chain control.  It packages behind the spikes so no bar length is lost.

The Side Step™ actuator can be directly connected to the hand guard to eliminate a band brake.  When throttle connected, full time chain control is assured.  Further, with kickback, the upper hand guard will force the throttle to idle.

Side Step™ Benefits

  • Full time chain control
  • Brake is renewed with each bar change
  • Light weight as the bar doubles as the brake
  • Cost reduction potential is enhanced with an integrated bar brake
